Canoeing the Tarwin River — Meeniyan to Stony Creek

Distance ~15 km (one way)
Difficulty Easy–Medium
Duration Half day (3–5 hours)
Type Paddling (canoe / kayak)
Start Point Meeniyan Bridge launch point

The middle reaches of the Tarwin River between Meeniyan and Stony Creek offer a peaceful and rewarding paddling experience. The river winds through rolling dairy farmland interspersed with beautiful sections of native riparian vegetation — and on a calm day, the reflections on the water are extraordinary.

Highlights

  • Platypus habitat — the Tarwin is confirmed platypus habitat; early morning or late afternoon paddles give the best chance of a sighting.
  • Birdlife — Azure Kingfishers, Grey Herons, Dusky Moorhens and White-faced Herons are commonly seen along this stretch.
  • Riparian vegetation — sections with intact native streambank vegetation showcase what the whole river could look like with restoration.
  • Quiet and remote — you’ll likely have the river to yourself.

Getting There and Logistics

Launch from the public reserve near Meeniyan Bridge. The paddle is one-way, so arrange a vehicle shuttle or a pickup at the Stony Creek bridge. Canoe and kayak hire may be available from local operators — check with South Gippsland tourism for current providers.

River Conditions

The Tarwin can be low in summer — check water levels before setting out. After heavy rain, currents may be stronger than usual. The river has a gentle gradient on this stretch and is suitable for beginners in calm conditions. Life jackets must be worn.
