eDNA Sampling — You Can Help

Environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling is a powerful new tool for detecting aquatic animals in waterways. Animals shed DNA into the water through their skin, scales, mucus and waste — and we can detect this DNA from a simple water sample.

We Love the Tarwin is partnering with researchers to train community members in eDNA sampling techniques. Participants collect water samples from sites across the catchment, which are then sent to the laboratory for analysis. The technique can detect platypus, native fish species, frogs, and even invasive species like carp.
