The Koonwarra to Meeniyan segment is one of the most popular sections of the Great Southern Rail Trail — a 136 km rail trail running through the heart of South Gippsland. This flat, well-maintained gravel trail makes it accessible for walkers, cyclists and families alike.

Highlights

  • Tarwin River Bridge — the trail crosses the Tarwin River on a restored railway bridge, offering a beautiful elevated view of the river and its riparian vegetation.
  • Farmland and bushland — the trail passes through a mosaic of dairy farmland and native bushland, with excellent birdwatching opportunities.
  • Koonwarra village — start or finish at the charming Koonwarra village, known for its organic food store and café.
  • Meeniyan — a classic South Gippsland town with a pub, café and excellent art gallery.

Getting There

Koonwarra is located approximately 10 minutes south of Leongatha on the South Gippsland Highway. Meeniyan is a further 5 km south. Car parking is available at both ends of the trail.

Trail Conditions

The trail is well-maintained compacted gravel, suitable for hybrid bikes and standard footwear. Dogs on leads are welcome. The trail is generally dry year-round but can be muddy after heavy rain in winter.
